Summary of the Activity: As part of the Emergency Programme to Support Pediatric Services in Libya, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, PUI is implementing a capacity building programme for health staff of the Oncology Department of the Benghazi Children Hospital. PUI is currently looking for a Specialist in safe handling and waste management of hazardous drugs to train healthcare workers employed in areas where hazardous drugs are handled or administered. Our aim is to provide emergency relief to uprooted people in order to help them recover their dignity and regain self-sufficiency. OVERVIEW 2.1 Project summaryPUI, in consortium with Terre Des Hommes Italy (TDH, consortium lead) and We World-GVC, is implementing a project to ensure universal access to integrated healthcare services for children and their families, in pediatric hospitals in eastern and western Libya. The intervention aims at improving the capacity of Tripoli and Benghazi pediatric hospitals to take integrated care of the most vulnerable target groups. The 15 months project has three lines of action in order to 1) Strengthen and improve the quality of care for children, caregivers and patients with special needs in the area of the target tertiary health care facility; 2) Give children and members of their families and communities access to psychosocial support during their stay in hospital; inform them and raise their awareness on socio-sanitary aspects and services available; 3) Strengthen the skills of health professionals, through exchanges, networking and information sharing among the health facilities in the targeted area. In this initiative PUI is responsible for the health intervention in the Children Hospital of Benghazi, focusing on the Oncology and Hematology Department. The activities aiming at improving the quality of care include the refurbishment of the facility, the provision of medical equipment and consumables, and the capacity building of the health staff. 2.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE CONSULTANCYAs part of the capacity building plan developed in coordination with the Hospital, PUI plans to train medical and nursing staff of the Oncology department and the outpatient clinic of the pediatric hospital, supporting the implementation of guidelines and SoPs. The training courses will be provided by qualified medical personnel, to ensure the application of the protocols, and the national standards of the Ministry of Health. In this regard, PUI is currently looking for a Specialist in safe handling and waste management of hazardous drugs to train healthcare workers employed in areas where hazardous drugs are handled or administered. The training is expected to take place starting from January 2024. OBJECTIVE OF THE TRAINING Training General Objective: Health staff of the Oncology Department are better equipped to implement safe handling practices to minimize and prevent occupational exposures, ensure patient safety, and limit environmental contamination. The aim of the module is to gain in-depth insight in: Engineering solutions to physically isolate the worker from drug exposure to the extent possible;Administrative controls and work practices that further minimize drug contact through a designated organization of work, and specified methods used to perform work tasks;Use of personal protective equipment and apparel to minimize drug contact with the skin or respiratory tract;Safe disposal of cytotoxic waste. TARGET AUDIENCE All pharmacists and nurses and other staff who work in areas where hazardous drugs are handled or administered should benefit from this training inside the department of pediatric oncology in the Benghazi Children Hospital. METHODOLOGY The training will be done face-to-face, in the form of conferences with cases and practical exercises. Supervision will include the discussion of practical cases and the monitoring/auditing of the rules and guidelines put in place. It will be given in English to pharmacists and in Arabic to nurses. TECHNICAL SUPPORT NEEDED The technical support should include: Development of training contents and trainees’ knowledge evaluation tools (pre and post-tests assessment tools)Training implementation (indicatively 2 days for pharmacists and 2 days for nurses) On the job supervision (indicatively 3 days for pharmacists and 3 days for nurses, 2 hours per day)Activity report N.B: The duration and the contents of the training are subject to modification according to the service provider technical offer.
