Medical Representative Job Description A medical sales representative is responsible for advertising, marketing and distributing a specific pharmaceutical product to relevant medical establishments. They meet with doctors and hospital teams and make presentations to persuade potential clients to use their goods which include medicines, prescription drugs, and medical equipment, to a variety of customers including general practitioners (GPs), hospital doctors, pharmacists, and nurses. The medical representative will increase product awareness, answer queries, provide advice and introduce new products. Medical sales representatives’ roles are generally office or home based, however, a large amount of time is spent traveling to and from clients. Key responsibilities include: • Organizing appointments and meetings with community- and hospital-based healthcare staff • Identifying and establishing new business • Negotiating contracts • Demonstrating or presenting products to healthcare staff including doctors, nurses and pharmacists • Undertaking relevant research • Meeting both the business and scientific needs of healthcare professionals • Maintaining detailed records • Attending and organizing trade exhibitions, conferences and meetings • Writing reports and other documents • Selling the company’s medications to doctors, pharmacists, and other relevant healthcare professionals. • Scheduling appointments with doctors, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to promote company medications. • Developing an in-depth understanding of company medications. • Building and maintaining good business relationships with customers to encourage repeat purchases. • Following up on leads generated by the company. • Preparing presentations for potential customers. • Researching competitor’s medications and their respective market performances. • Keeping abreast of new developments in the medical field to determine the effect of such developments on the company’s business strategies. • Arranging appointments with doctors, pharmacists and hospital medical teams, which may include pre-arranged appointments or regular ‘cold’ calling • Making presentations to doctors, practice staff and nurses in GP surgeries, hospital doctors and pharmacists in the retail sector • Organize conferences for doctors and other medical staff • Build and maintain positive working relationships with medical staff and support administrative staff • Winning new customers, as well as developing long-term relationships with existing ones • planning work schedules and weekly and monthly timetables with the area sales team or discuss future targets with the area Sales Manager • Regularly attending company meetings, technical data presentations and briefings • Keeping up to date with the latest clinical data supplied by the company, and interpret, present and discuss this data with health professionals during presentations • Analyzing sales data to improve results and make sure resources are effectively allocated • Monitoring competitor activity and competitors’ products • Keeping up to date with new developments in the Ministry of Health legislations, anticipate potential negative and positive impacts on the business and adapt strategy accordingly • Developing strategies for increasing opportunities to meet and talk to contacts in the medical and healthcare sector • Staying informed about the activities of health services in a particular area. Job Requirements Relevant qualification in life sciences, pharmacy, medicine, nursing or dentistry. • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, or related field. • Proven medical sales experience. • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. • Valid driver’s license. • Strong negotiation skills. • Excellent organizational skills. • Effective communication skills. • Exceptional customer service skills. • Persuasive and resilient. • Maturity and Confidence Skills You’ll need to have: • excellent communication and presentation skills • an outgoing and persuasive manner and negotiating skills • sales and customer relationship skills • confidence and persistence • patience and self-motivation • analytical and planning skills • a flexible approach to work in order to adapt to changes, for example in the healthcare system or product and drug formulae • strong teamwork and networking skills • commercial and business awareness.
